Rediscovering my Battle of the Brains roots at Murphy's Irish Bar

I used to be a party girl, going out almost three times a week spending the night away drinking (beer with a straw) and dancing. Work has stripped me of my party life, partly because I started working on a night shift, but most importantly, it was too hard for me to see my hard earned money go into waste. For the past 4 years that I have been working, I'd rather spend my weekends at home - sleeping and eating.

Last Tuesday, however, I rediscovered my night mode roots when Daddy Selwyn invited me to join their trivia team - Trivia Nights at Murphy's Irish Bar in Herrera, Makati!!! I didn't know of the game's existence till now - it has been an ongoing tradition in the bar for the past year!

I was hesitant to go since the trivia game starts at 8:30 PM and ends right before midnight (I have a fixed 6 AM shift), but my sister pushed me, urged and begged me to go since she knows I am a trivia freak (we are trivia freaks thanks to my dad). So I called up Nicky (my newest neighbor) and asked her to go with me (she LOVES Murphy's bar due to the fact that it's filled with expats haha - well, she claims that she adores the food, too!) And boy, I am sooo glad I went because I had so much fun and learned a lot of new stuff!!!

So the game goes like this. The trivia takes place in the bar's multi-function room (no smoking allowed thank God!). You sign your team up, usually composed of 4-6 members. There are 10 questions for each of the 10 categories - ranging from Arts and Music, to Philippine Locations, Geography, Hollywood trivia. The team writes the answers in a sheet of paper submitted to the judges. Of course, the team with the highest points wins.

Even Bong Barrameda and the Student Canteen and Battle of the Brains contestants are regulars! I was definitely Star Struck with Bong Barrameda - he is the author of Brain Blitz, a flash card collection of trivia questions which I used to review during my Battle of the Brains stint.

The team I joined won that night - we got 90 of the 100 questions. It was a dinner for four at a posh resto in Makati. The team is composed of a groovy film major who's in her 50's, a British expat who is like 79 years old and has been living in the Philippines for 29 years, another brilliant expat (who took an exotic Pinay date with him that night) and Daddy Sel who took care of the Science questions. Daddy Sel asked me to join them because they needed somebody who's young to take care of Current Events - music and entertainment stuff.  That is my dilemma, I dont like new songs - I am an oldie when it comes to songs and movies. Haha. :)

I was able to contribute a few answers to the team, mostly in Geography (capitals of the world haha) and I LOVED THE EXPERIENCE just because it is refreshing to learn new stuff while drinking a Stella Artois! Even Nicky enjoyed it, she has now another reason to go to Murphy's aside from taking her dates and gushing over expats. My Tuesday nights will never be the same!

GOOO TRIVIA TEAM!!!
